For decades, there have been disagreements over whether or not Puerto Rico should become the 51st state. Because Puerto Rico is only a US territory, its citizens are considered US citizens, but are unable to vote for in the presidential election, has no representation in congress, and has to pay higher prices for almost everything, including health care. Most recently, the aftermath of Hurricane Irma and the slow response brought the debate into the spotlight, especially because of the island’s financial struggles. If Puerto Rico were to become a state, it would benefit financially, would receive the same benefits as US states.
Tensions have always high between the nations of Haiti and the Dominican Republic, much like the tension between the US and Mexico now. Most of the tension deals with the immigration between the two countries and racism. In the Dominican Republic, there are arguments that Haitian immigrants are stealing jobs and the government went so far as to pass laws that resulted in hundreds of thousands of Dominicans with Haitian heritage losing their citizenship. In 2013, it was ruled that all with an immigrant ancestor in the last 80 years were ineligible for citizenship. Since then, a path to citizenship has been created, but most are still unable to achieve citizenship. This has created heightened racial tension
