The main factors that affect the climate in the Caribbean include the elevation, currents, and the latitude/location. Because the Caribbean is just north of the equator, the climate tends to be tropical. However, certain regions in the Caribbean are fairly mountainous, especially Hispaniola which houses both the highest and lowest points of the Caribbean (on land). The Caribbean also bears the biggest impact of El Niño and La Niña, as well as heavy implications of climate change. The combination of the two phenomena and climate change has led to longer droughts and increased hurricanes and tropical storms.
